Character NAME: Serah Farron
Canon & MEDIUM: Final Fantasy XIII-2 (video game)
Canon PULL-POINT: After the final battle with Caius in the last episode, when she and Noel go through the gate to return to Academia 500AF. So basically, just before the legit ending scene.
Character AGE: 21
Character ABILITIES:

After the events of XIII and Cocoon’s fall, some people suddenly had the ability to cast magic, even if they weren’t l’Cie. Serah was one of these people, and so has basically the same abilities as the l’Cie from XIII, excepting the ability to summon an Eidolon.

She starts off with the Commando, Ravager and Sentinel roles. Commando focuses on physical attacks and non-elemental magic, Ravager focuses on elemental magic and strike moves, and Sentinel focuses on increasing defence to withstand powerful enemy attacks. Eventually, Serah is also able to learn abilities within the Medic, Synergist and Saboteur roles too—Medic focusing on healing magic, Synergist focusing on magic like Protect and Shell and Saboteur focusing on magic that harms the enemy, like Poison or Deprotect.

Serah excels the most at the Ravager and Saboteur roles, having quite high magical ability but lower strength compared to Noel. She is also a faster caster than he is; she’s very agile in battle, even if she’s not extremely powerful physically. She also has her special skill, Ultima Arrow, which involves raining down arrows on the enemy.

Other than that, Serah also has what’s known as “the Eyes of Etro”. While she would not have this ability in Exsilium, it involves being able to see the entire future of the timeline. (XIII-2 is all about time and space, after all). She can also enlist the aid of monsters in battle, though this is also most likely a skill not relevant to Exsilium.

Character HISTORY: We can change the future and stop Cocoon from falling.

Character PERSONALITY:

Before the whole l’Cie business started, way back in XIII, Serah was just a normal teenage girl, attending school and living in the beach city of Bodhum. Three years later, she’s instead living in the Pulse colony of New Bodhum, can use magic, teaches children and misses her fiancé and older sister fiercely.

As a teenager, because Lightning was a soldier in the Guardian Corp and consequently away from home a lot, Serah learned to be independent. Their parents died when they were both still young, so it had always only been the two of them. During this time, Serah was very studious and excelled in school, more than smart enough to attend university in Eden. She had a special interest in history, which is basically the reason behind her becoming a l’Cie.

In XIII, Serah is the type of person who is quite mature and brave for her age, and she’s occasionally known to express wisdom beyond her years, like when she’s talking to Vanille. She’s not the type to be selfish, since she knows Lightning supports the both of them with her job. And Serah, above everything else, cares about her sister a lot: she’s the only family Serah has left.

Unlike Lightning, though, Serah is very sociable and friendly; she makes friends easily. So it was pretty inevitable that she would meet Snow, the leader of NORA, and fall for him. She was lonely, maybe, and she’d found someone who understood and adored her. At her core, Serah’s a bit of a romantic, and that’s a part of her that’s not as mature as the rest: it’s the part of her that refuses to accept Lightning’s disapproval of Snow. Even though a lot of that disapproval has to do with Serah choosing Snow over attending university.

She’s also naïve in the respect that she doesn’t fully understand the world around her; she’s not completely world-wise in XIII. While Serah is independent and has been for a while, she has a certain naïve curiosity that ends up being to her detriment. The prime example of this is her choosing to explore the Pulse Vestige, despite knowing the dangers. The consequence? Becoming a l’Cie. Serah was terrified of becoming a monster, of becoming an enemy to the people she loved. So her choice was to push them away instead and try to deal with it alone.

It wasn’t about trust or love—it was about fear at what she’d become and fear that she might hurt Snow or Lightning. What she ended up underestimating were Snow’s feelings for her, but Serah tried to be brave enough to face it alone. This bravery allowed her to defy her Focus (well, along with some divine intervention) and turn to crystal regardless.

In XIII-2, three years have passed since Serah awoke from her crystal sleep, and the world is greatly changed. Instead of reuniting with her sister at the end of XIII, Lightning ended up in Valhalla, and Serah was the only one who remembered that she wasn’t in the crystal pillar with Fang and Vanille.

Living in New Bodhum with NORA, Serah was able to go on with a semblance of normal life. But, especially after Snow left, she felt lonely and abandoned, and put on a brave face to deal with this. She first appears in XIII-2 crying and freaking out over the meteorite crash, screaming out for Lightning to help her. But this impression doesn’t last long: Serah shows that she’s more than capable of being tough and defending herself, and her decision to travel with Noel is part of this.

She’s a very kind and caring person, as demonstrated by showing concern for Noel despite knowing nothing about him in the beginning. But throughout the journey, she offers him advice and encouragement, being the morale booster of the group. Serah’s very resilient in that respect; she’s not completely in Stepford Smiler territory like Vanille, but she can shrug off her own negative feelings to keep moving forward.

Serah can also be intimidating when angered, especially to the children of New Bodhum. This earns her the nickname of “Meanie Miss Farron”. She’s said to resemble Lightning when she’s looking angry or serious—so, even though she’s the friendlier of the two, she definitely has inherited some of the Farron traits. But, most of all, her bravery has carried over into XIII-2.

Despite not knowing what lies ahead, Serah keeps going forward to find her sister; even after she finds out Snow is a l’Cie again and he disappears right in front of her. She still wants to save Cocoon and change the future, no matter what. And also even after she finds out that her visions are shortening her life and that changing the future will basically kill her, Serah keeps going—this knowledge is still not enough to stop her.

Vanille sums up Serah in a good way. “Even if there was nothing waiting for her, Serah was brave enough to face it.”

» EXSILIUM INFORMATION
Chosen WEAPON: Her bowblade! It is basically a bow that can also transform into a sword, in the same vein as her sister’s gunblade. In-game, it also happens to be Mog, but obviously in Exsilium that would not be the case.

Chosen SKILLSET: Serah is a fighter and can definitely hold her own in battle now, so she would definitely be up for being involved in missions.

First PERSON: Right here is Serah’s intro post at Luceti!

Third PERSON:

There were times when she’d doubted herself. Before, Serah had never imagined she’d go on a journey like this. She’d imagined staying in New Bodhum, being Meanie Miss Farron. But then Snow had left to find Lightning, and NORA had tried so hard to keep her happy that she hadn’t known what else to do other than keep smiling. It hadn’t been so bad, after all. But “not so bad” wasn’t a good way to live, not permanently, and Serah had wanted so badly to find her sister.

She’d come a long way since then—travelling with Noel meant growing stronger in her own right, learning to fight where before she’d allowed herself to be protected. She didn’t want to be the damsel to a hero anymore; she wanted to be a hero herself, able to keep the people and places she loved safe. It hadn’t been easy, and there’d been times when it might’ve been better to give up.

But in those times, Serah remembered the others. Lightning, fighting in Valhalla. Hope, creating a new future while everyone else disappeared in front of him. Fang and Vanille, carrying their crystal burden in repentance. Sazh, lost in time and pulling through to help at the last moment. Snow, a l’Cie again, his own path to heroism.

None of them had given up, and they’d saved the world while she’d been in her own crystal sleep. Serah felt she owed it to them to do the same, this time, no matter what saving the future required of her. It hadn’t been easy, knowing what lay ahead. But moving forward was the only thing that still made sense.

As Caius disappeared and the gates started closing, Serah made sure to stay positive. No matter what came next, or how much time she had left to see it, she was going to keep going. She’d come this far already, and falling at the last hurdle seemed almost worse than giving up from the beginning.

So she smiled at Noel and Mog; her two unlikely companions, now integral. She ran ahead through the last gate, imagining what the new future would look like.
